5 Ways to Overcome Anxiety
It isn't easy to overcome anxiety and there are hundreds of books and websites dedicated to telling you how to do so. Sometimes, though, the simplest methods work the best. Here are 5 easy ways to help control your anxiety to make the quality of your life just a little bit better.
1. Understand that you might not be able to control situations that make you anxious, but that you do have a certain amount of control over the way that you react to these situations. Unfortunately, you can't control traffic, crowds, and swarms of bees. However, you do have control over how you react to them. That, within itself, gives you power.
2. Understand why you are feeling anxiety. For the most part, people start feeling anxiety when they start thinking that a situation is either going to get worse, or they feel as though they don't have control over the situation at hand. Understanding why you feel anxious can start helping you overcome anxiety. After all, knowing is half the battle.
3. Stay positive. Some people say that imagining the worst-case scenario is one of the best ways to overcome anxiety. However, if you have persistent anxiety, this might not be the best cause of action for you. In fact, it might make things worse. Instead, try to find positive elements to the situation-no matter how small they might be.
4. Don't try to hide your anxiety. Sometimes, you might be ashamed of your anxiety. Unfortunately, trying to hide it can make it even more stressful. Instead, try to find positive outlets of showing your anxiety. Taking a break by walking into another room, reading a few pages of a book, or humming song lyrics to yourself are all better ways of giving into your anxiety just a little bit, without ignoring it all together.
5. Switch medications. Not all anxiety medications work the same for everyone. If you find that yours make you too tired, keep you awake at night, make you jittery, or make you even more anxious, then talk to your doctor about trying something else. Don't be afraid to let your doctor now that they're not working for you. On the other hand, give them time to work, too.
Remember that you don't have to live with constant anxiety. There is help available and you shouldn’t be afraid to seek it. Anxiety can cause mental and even physical pain and constant anxiety should never be ignored.
