A Few Helpful Tips to Overcoming Anxiety

Overcoming anxiety can be very difficult and trying to learn methods to overcoming it can sometimes even bring on more anxiety. However, it can be achieved and should be attempted since excessive anxiety can affect the overall quality of your life and even cause you physical pain. Here are a few helpful tips to overcoming anxiety that you can start using today.

1. Try to control your thoughts. If you have anxiety, then you know that your thoughts and imagination can run away from you. Do try to rein them in. Give yourself a second or two to have the thoughts, and then make a physical and mental effort to stop the negative feelings and scenarios and instead focus on something positive.

2. Stay positive at night. Do not let anxious thoughts enter your mind once you lay down at night. Once they go to bed, many people stress about everything that happened over the course of their day. Instead of doing this, once you lay down, think about all of the positive things that happened during the day.

3. Divert your attention. If you start having anxiety, then divert your own attention. Do this with a physical activity, with a song lyric, or with a few pages out of a book. Find something that works for you and then stick with it.

4. If a certain situation is making you feel anxiety, then one trick to overcoming anxiety in this type of circumstance is to find some small way of working towards that situation every day. If, for instance, not having a job is causing you anxiety then set aside 2 hours every day to your job search. Use those 2 hours to revamp your resume, drive around looking for "hiring" signs, or even looking online. Sometimes, working towards a goal even in a small way can help alleviate anxiety.

5. Control the situation as best as you can. If watching the late night news always causes you anxiety, then don't watch it! If going to Wal-Mart at 5:00 pm with all the people makes you feel stressed, then start going early in the morning. This isn't necessarily avoidance either. Sometimes, it's just using common sense. There are many things and situations that you can't control. Having limited control over some things can make you feel stronger, which can go a long way in helping you when it comes to overcoming anxiety.
